Forty five letters, mostly handwritten, detailing the relationship between Peggy Hayes and Xavier Herbert. The last letter to Hayes, 23 Sept. 1983, addresses Herbert's 'attitude towards the Aboriginal problem' and encloses an article from The Bulletin, 1 Nov. 1983, entitled The backlash. Papers include: 35 letters from Xavier Herbert to Peggy Hayes (also known as Margaret Edwards); 5 letters from Herbert to Hayes's daughter, Vicki Edwards; 1 letter from Herbert to Hayes's sister, Anna Mylne; 2 letters from Herbert to John Molony; 1 letter from Herbert to Ken Wilder; 1 letter from Herbert to Jim Baker; 1 postcard from David Marr (1996) advising Hayes to lodge the letters in the Fryer Library; 1 photograph of Herbert with Aboriginal children; newspaper clipping, photograph of Herbert and Hayes; article from The Australian Women's Weekly, July 1990, about Herbert and Hayes.

Peggy Hayes, also known as Margaret Edwards, correspondent of author, (Alfred Jackson) Xavier Herbert, 1901-1984.
